A very warm welcome and pleasant evening to all our esteemed guests.
Tonight feels like a family reunion for Malaysian basketball. We are all gathered here from across the country, and it truly warms my heart to see how much effort everyone has put in over the years to develop basketball and make real progress in Malaysia.
Our achievements are the result of teamwork, shared goals and everyone’s commitment. Together, we have built a strong team.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Year of the Horse is approaching. In Chinese tradition, the Horse represents courage, perseverance and the drive to move forward. It is a year filled with energy and momentum. More importantly, these qualities reflect the key phase of transformation and progress that MABA is now entering. In the Year of the Horse, we must move faster, work harder, and continue pushing our development forward.
Please allow me to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year in advance. May you lead with confidence in all you do, and may success follow you throughout the year.
Ladies and gentlemen, the joint-venture partners of the redevelopment of MABA Land – the MABA Suitez project – are the founders of the Exsim Group, brothers Lim Aik Hoe and Lim Aik Kiat. They are bold in action and visionary in their ambitions.
This collaboration between MABA and the Exsim Group is not only a unique opportunity, but also a sincere contribution by Exsim Group to the development of national sports after achieving strong corporate growth.
On this occasion of our MABA family reunion, I would like to express our deepest appreciation to Exsim Group for honouring its commitment by advancing RM50 million in cash payments to MABA, starting this year and continuing annually. The annual advance has also been increased from RM4 million to RM6 million.
This marks a historic milestone. From this year onward, MABA steps into a new era of financial independence.
Ladies and gentlemen, as we enter this period of transition, I am filled with emotion reflecting on the past. Over the past four years, we have worked hard to set up a systematic framework for Malaysian basketball through MABA’s Five Pilot Projects. This framework will provide predictability, continuous improvement and reduce dependence on individuals — ensuring MABA’s long-term stability and sustainability.
MABA has transformed from a traditional association-style operation into a corporate-style management model, moving from depending on external fundraising to creating resources through redevelopment. This is an approach never before seen in Malaysian sports, and it is truly innovative.
I must sincerely thank the MABA team for their resilience and determination. Turning the Five Pilot Projects from blueprint into reality has never been an easy task.
In 2025, the Five Pilot Projects made significant progress. Last November, the groundbreaking of MABA Suitez marked an important milestone. These 60-storey twin towers, set to become a landmark in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, are expected to be completed in 2031.
Ladies and gentlemen, with four of the Five Pilot Projects now realised, a new landscape has taken shape in Malaysian basketball, we have established the long-term structural foundation of our sport. Yet the greater challenge lies ahead — continuously improving what we have built, nurturing high-quality elite players, strengthening the professional league and managing player naturalisation sustainably.
We have recently completed the first batch of player naturalisations, which includes three players — one for the men’s 3×3, one for the men’s 5×5, and one for the women’s team.
Meanwhile, our long-term development programmes are beginning to show results, with a growing pool of talented young players. This is thanks to our three national youth training centres — Bukit Jalil Sports School, Pahang Gambang Sports School and Pin Hwa High School in Klang — which continuously provide new talent to support the ongoing growth of basketball in Malaysia.
The youth movement in Malaysian basketball is gaining real momentum. Since 2022, registrations for the national youth selection camp at Bukit Jalil Sports School have grown significantly — from just a few dozen in the first year to 127 last year. This is a remarkable transformation and a clear sign that basketball is becoming more widely accessible across the country. Most importantly, we have the strong support of parents, who truly recognise MABA’s role in nurturing the next generation of basketball talent. Our confidence is further strengthened by the fact that our student players continue to prioritise their education. Since the inception of basketball programme at Bukit Jalil Sports School, every player has earned their SPM certificate, and some have gone on to pursue pre-university studies.
Social media has also played a significant role in raising the profile of local basketball, driving strong interest and engagement in our competitions. Even with ticket prices reaching RM100, matches continue to sell out.
The rejuvenation of both players and fans has become the new normal for Malaysian basketball. This new generation represents the vital energy and fresh momentum needed for the sport to mature and grow sustainably.
I am pleased to share that our new generation of players has begun to make its mark on the international stage. In 2025, they finished as runners-up at the Asian University Games, a clear demonstration of their potential to become a strong force in national basketball.
Ladies and gentlemen, our league will continue to mature and improve. We are confident that in the near future, it will become one of the most influential leagues in the region.
However, I must remind everyone that the ultimate goal of MABA’s Five Pilot Projects — winning gold — has yet to be achieved. From this moment on, our full focus must be firmly set on September 2027, when Malaysia hosts the SEA Games.
We have invested significant financial and human resources into basketball development for one clear purpose: to win gold on home soil. The 2027 SEA Games will be the ultimate test of everything we have built.
Accordingly, MABA has set a clear target for the 2027 SEA Games: one gold medal, or two silver medals.
Before I conclude, on behalf of the Malaysia Basketball Association, I would like to once again express our heartfelt appreciation to YB Nga Kor Ming, for taking time out of his demanding schedule to join us this evening and officiate our Annual Dinner.
Thank you, and good night.
