Representatives from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Dr. Mohammed Taufiq bin Johari, to officially inform the Ministry of FIBA’s decision to relocate its Regional Office Asia from Beirut to Kuala Lumpur in January 2027.
The FIBA delegation was represented by Chief Operating Officer Mr Patrick Mariller and Mr Wasim Khan MBE, who will take over as Executive Director of the FIBA Regional Office Asia in January 2027. MABA was represented by Secretary General Mr Tan Kee Hian and General Manager Mr Sim Leong Kun.
The Minister warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed his pleasure at FIBA’s decision to establish its regional office in Malaysia. The visit also provided an opportunity for FIBA to share its vision and the latest developments in basketball worldwide, while strengthening ties with KBS and other relevant government agencies.
During the friendly discussion, the Minister was pleased to learn about the encouraging progress of Malaysia’s 3×3 basketball programme, particularly its achievements in international competitions.
He also welcomed MABA’s initiative to introduce 3×3 basketball hoops in Sekolah Kebangsaan, which aims to encourage more children to take up basketball from a young age.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides looking forward to closer cooperation in developing basketball in Malaysia and across the region.
