Advancing Officiating Excellence: Insights from MABA’s Referees Instructor Workshop 2024

From April 27th to 29th, 2024, the Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA) held its Referees Instructor Workshop at the Wisma MABA. A total of 29 participants attended, including technical commissioners, referee assessors, and seasoned referees. We were honoured to have Mr. Walid Marcel Abi Rached, the Sport & Competition Assistant Manager Head of Refereeing – Asia, as the instructor for this workshop. With his extensive experience in FIBA Asia, the training promised to be both engaging and insightful.

Mr. Walid delivered his teachings in an engaging and humorous manner, ensuring that all participants benefited greatly. The workshop combined theory with practical exercises, starting with open-ended discussions and culminating in the referees assessing and explaining decisions using a more professional and scientific approach over the three days.

In line with the global trend towards professionalism, Mr. Sunny San Chyi Her, MABA Technical Advisor, emphasised during the closing remarks that MABA will continue to organise similar training sessions in the future. This commitment aims to ensure synchronised growth for both players and technical staff, reflecting the association’s dedication to excellence in basketball officiating.
