In Memoriam: Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dato’ Yeoh Choo Hock, a towering figure in the world of basketball, who left us this morning at the age of 80. His departure is a tremendous loss not only to the Malaysian basketball community but also to the global sporting world that he so passionately served throughout his life.

For over three decades, Dato’ Yeoh was the heartbeat of Malaysian basketball. His journey began as a dedicated player and evolved into a remarkable career in basketball administration. Serving as the Secretary General of the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) for 17 years, Vice President for 2 years, and later as the Secretary General of FIBA Asia for 14 years, Dato’ Yeoh was instrumental in shaping the landscape of basketball in Malaysia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. His role as Secretary General of SEABA, and his tenure as a FIBA Vice President, underscored his commitment to the sport on a global scale.

Dato’ Yeoh’s leadership extended to the international stage, where he served as a FIBA Commissioner at four Olympic Games and numerous FIBA World Championships. His efforts to bring basketball to new heights were not just limited to administration. He was a driving force behind Malaysia’s national team, guiding them to a historic gold medal at the 1989 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, and organizing significant international tournaments, such as the Women’s Basketball World Championship in Malaysia.

His outstanding achievements did not go unnoticed, earning him prestigious awards like the 1997 Best CEO Award from the USA Basketball Association and the 2001 John Wooden Lifetime Service Award. More recently, he was nominated for the FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame by MABA President Dato’ Seri Lee Tian Hock, a testament to his enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to the sport.

Dato’ Yeoh was more than just an administrator; he was a visionary leader, a mentor, and an inspiration to all who crossed paths with him. His tireless dedication to the growth of basketball is a legacy that will live on in the countless players, coaches, and fans he inspired throughout his life.

The Malaysia Basketball Association extends its deepest condolences to Dato’ Yeoh’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his generosity and passion for the game. His impact on Malaysian and international basketball is immeasurable, and his memory will forever be cherished in the annals of sports history.
